Art Appreciation Workshop for Blind by Furrah Syed

Introduction
There are 2 aspects to experiencing art; spatial and temporal. For sighted people, appreciating art is very much a visual experience; they see the ‘whole picture at any given time in a spatial way. When viewing larger pieces of art such as installation art, big sculptures or even architecture, the experience is more temporal as the whole picture only becomes visible sequentially - in a flowing yet piecemeal manner - as one moves around the object. Sighted people utilise both
the fixed spatial and the flowing temporal aspects when experiencing art; however the spatial aspect appears to outweigh the temporal one.
For blind people the opposite is true. Art appreciation becomes a non-visual tactile experience in which the art is experienced by actually touching and feeling the art in a sequential way. In this case, the temporal aspect dominates the spatial aspect.

Christian at work in Britanny, France

French artist Christian Pendelio paints the scenery into an imagery of love and voyage spiced with witty allegories. The dreamy fairyland and stylized characters intrigue viewers to waves of thoughts. Voyage is a solitary course of discovery while love the destination of every man. The pastel palette adds a fancy touch to the landscape, with a salty taste and loving theme. Whimsical and playful, Christian’s paintings give a sense of humor and an intriguing after-taste.

Jasmin Zara at work in Noosa, Queensland, Australia

I aim to capture the emotion that resonates from natures patterns and intense compositions found within the earthy landscapes and pristine beaches of Australia, said Jasmin

Heidi Hahn (Germany)

Living light, endless horizons and colours which touch your soul, these are the dominating factors in Heidi Hahns work. This combination of the palpable with an abstract view of reality is how the paintings create a level of representation and perception beyond reality, but also beyond abstraction - leading away from the sole perception of the image to a gaze that is focused inwards, from simply seeing to feeling.
With these ideas and motifs Heidi Hahn follows in the footsteps of artists such as Caspar David Friedrich or Claude Monet, who did not just want to paint what they saw, but who wanted their images to convey the emotions that this seeing released.
